Pink October the early detection of breast cancer

Every year it is celebrated in several countries of the month prevention and early detection of breast cancer: is October Rose, popular movement which had its first edition in California (USA) in 1997 and spread throughout the world. This month campaigns disseminate information about the disease, and especially the importance of detecting it early, when the chances of cure up to 100%.

João Ricardo Auler Paloschi, mastologist Amaral Carvalho Hospital (CAH), explains that this is an awareness movement. "Many people have the view that breast cancer is a death sentence and Pink October is an opportunity to show the public that there is quality of life post-treatment and higher chances of cure."

The need for self-knowledge and empower women see afloat in the month color pink. According Paloschi, people need to see beyond the myths that surround the subject. "It is a reminder to women that they must be alert not only to the breasts, but your health in general," he emphasizes.

information

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that affects more women in Brazil and most other countries. According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA) in the period 2012/2013 approximately 53 000 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in the country. Of these, an estimated 12 thousand deaths. However, this situation may change with the dissemination of information. Often, when a woman says she has cancer of the breast, instead of finding support and words of comfort, listening lamentations and unsubstantiated assertions. Paloschi explains why it is important to understand the disease. "That story that 'whoever seeks, finds' or 'better not move, but spreads' are speculations that should be banned."

The doctor is emphatic that the cancer death varies greatly, according to the staging of the disease: the more advanced, the greater the chances of treatment failure.

"Sometimes I wonder if it is very difficult to give a diagnosis of breast cancer. Honestly, it's not easy! But is less difficult than you think, because the vision that people have of breast cancer, before knowing the reality, is infinitely worse than what I explain to her. Indeed, breast cancer in the head of the individual is often incurable, a person can only see the bad side and the difficulties of treatment. reality show When I say what will be done, what are the chances, of course it's not nice, but the impact is less than expected, "reports Paloschi.

reclassification

In general, cancer is a disease that is characterized by abnormal cells that lose control on their multiplication. "Normal cells have a known life cycle: they are born, grow, perform certain functions, age and die. Cancer is to break that cycle," punctuates the mastologist. To facilitate understanding, one can imagine that the altered cell loses its functions and multiplies quickly, without proper control mechanisms. This multiplication can affect nearby organs and their functions as well.

Recently, much has been said in reclassification of types of breast tumors, but according Paloschi, these studies are not new. "Some time ago we know that there are four major groups of tumor types, for immunobiological analysis, if so to speak. However, we are still in its infancy with respect to handle these different groups individually. Depending on each of them, we can vary the type of surgery or chemotherapy and also use of specific medications, known as targeted therapy. This new knowledge allows us to perform a more efficient handling for each of these groups. expectation is that the advancement of research bring new methods, medications , surgeries, among others, that could au ment further the chances of curing the disease, individualizing each case.'s undoubtedly a moment of great expectation of a brighter future in the search for the cure of breast cancer, "he argues.

standard treatment

Surgical procedure (local), chemotherapy, hormone therapy or targeted therapy (systemic), and radiotherapy (which returns to local control), are the basic procedures of the protocol for treatment of breast cancer. However, the medical HAC stresses that patients need not all of the four modalities, as well as some need but do not have clinical conditions suitable for such. "For example, a patient 90 years not resist the whole process, then, the ideal is to tailor the treatment to the patient's reality. Exhausted the possibilities within each case."

symptoms

The palpable nodule is the most common symptom of breast cancer, detected through breast self-examination (see box), a procedure that should be performed monthly after the menstrual period. Women should also be aware of:

Retraction of the skin;
Changing the contour of the breast;
Nipple retraction;
Asymmetry of the breasts;
Redness of the skin of the breasts;
Swelling in the breasts;
Nipple discharge with blood;
Ganglia that arise in the armpits that grow and persist (not vanish).

It is important to remember that if the woman has any of these symptoms does not mean you have breast cancer. "There are numerous other diseases of the breast that can cause these signs and symptoms, which are simple to treat, but they deserve attention," advises Paloschi.

Regarding the myths about the symptoms, the doctor points out that the HAC regardless of size, stiffness of the lump, pain or not present, the breast cancer specialist should be consulted. He is the expert who knows evaluate claims, and request additional tests to diagnose the disease in question.

Paloschi also commented that it is very common for people to think they should only seek care and exams to assess breast health if they have any symptoms. Not so. Not always the patient with breast cancer symptoms. "People think you have to have a symptom to have a health problem. You can have high blood pressure and feel nothing, having diabetes and not showing any signs, finally, many diseases have symptoms only when in advanced stage and it can happen with breast cancer as well, "added Paloschi. Hence the importance of conducting preventive examinations should be conducted according to medical guidelines in asymptomatic patients.

Mammography and ultrasound

Asymptomatic women, aged from 40 should do the screening test, mammography. "The higher the age, higher the chances of developing the disease, so the test should be done yearly," explains mastologist. The exams given by your doctor may still find impalpable lesions, millimeters, and this will greatly facilitate the treatment and cure of disease.

Women of any age with specific complaint, should seek a breast cancer specialist for diagnosis.

According to the doctor, in a country like Brazil, where mammography is still difficult to access in many locations, the October Rose also becomes an opportunity to take the exam, since many actions include joint effort of mammograms. Also according to the mastologist, it is worth noting that ultrasound is a complementary test, which must be requested at the discretion of the attending physician and not a substitute for mammography.

Why look for a mastologist?

If about 40 years ago, the same doctor came from hangnail to heart attack, today things are different. Due to developments in medicine, for most human organs, there is a specialist. "In my view this is crucial, because the specialist knowledge arguably has a broader and deeper about the pathologies that works and can carry at least one treatment more efficient," considers Paloschi.

And nobody better than mastologist - which to specialize in this area, must have initial training in general surgery or gynecology - to prevent and diagnose breast disease, not just cancer. "It is not necessary to be in trouble to seek mastologist.'s Important that people understand that the conduct preventive ensures early detection of any changes in the breasts, which reflects positively on the results of any treatment," recalls Paloschi.

culture

The current scenario, especially Brazil, shows that much remains to be done to raise awareness about breast cancer. There are people who do not realize the self-examination, do not seek medical care for the prevention, among other things fail to do. "A big problem in our country is that people leave everything to the last minute, including health. Changing this paradigm is essential to make society aware of the preventive measures," added the doctor.

Early diagnosis allows a less aggressive treatment. The doctor believes that the focus of campaigns to change in some ways. "You have to show the benefits of early diagnosis. Today many different surgical resources such as sentinel lymph node biopsy, minimally invasive surgeries, breast reconstructions using techniques oncoplásticas among others, but that are geared to patients with diagnoses early. Moreover, treatments of chemo and radiotherapy may be more lenient or not, depending on early diagnosis. When the patient become aware of these great benefits, perhaps alone seek preventive a habit, not only in relation to health breast? ", questions the mastologist.

Autoestima

The Amaral Carvalho Hospital receives annually between covenants, private and by the Unified Health System (SUS), about 600 new cases of breast cancer. Paloschi clarifies that it is essential to support the institution's Psychology Service, which conducts visits and monitoring to patients while they are hospitalized and ambulatory patient care when needed.

The reason the doctor reveals, is to facilitate the treatment, increase compliance, reassure and support the patient in the face of new challenges to be faced by him. "Therefore, I have no doubt that the chances of success are higher," reaffirms the doctor. "We treat a patient, not a disease. Treating a patient healthy, positive thinker who is willing, with high self esteem, is much more likely to succeed in treatment than a patient who does not trust, do not believe, no want, "he says.

Therefore, self-esteem and family support are key for successful treatment and patient recovery. "The immune system reacts more efficiently, without doubt, which only has to help," added the doctor.

Did you know?

The higher the age, higher the chances of developing breast cancer? But that does not mean that younger people can not have the disease.

That, theoretically, for every 100 women, 1 man only develops breast cancer? It is unusual, but men can also have this type of cancer.

The group of breast cancer risk: obese people who routinely drink and women who use hormone medications without medical supervision and control?
That is not necessary to have cases of breast cancer in the family to develop the disease?
